Dyslexia Advocacy Series
Join us for the "Dyslexia Advocacy Series" – a virtual session designed for parents, educators, and allies, hosted by Barb Orsi, Advocate for children with Dyslexia and Amy Trombetti, SPEDCO CEO/Founder & Administrative Specialist.

Every fourth Thursday of the month, this low-cost session will empower you to "know your rights" and develop actionable plans to secure appropriate education for children with learning differences.
Individuals with dyslexia might struggle with reading, writing and spelling, but they exchange these difficulties for strengths in other areas. Dyslexic individuals are extremely creative and can have gifts in cognitive and emotional areas, according to the Yale Center for Dyslexia and Creativity. At Phillips Fundamental Learning Center, we call these strengths super powers.
Some of the areas dyslexic people excel in can include science, problem solving, empathy, art, visual-spatial abilities and more. While we can teach dyslexic people to read, we cannot teach these gifts that dyslexic individuals are given at birth. We love to help dyslexic children discover their super powers! We do this by helping them self-identify their strengths and encouraging them to pursue them.
Identifying dyslexic children’s super powers can give them the confidence they need to forge ahead in school and reach their loftiest dreams.
When a child struggles to read, many parents do not know where to look for assistance. As a first step, PFLC offers dyslexia assessments for children ages 5-18 who might have reading difficulties.

If you have a child who is struggling to learn to read, write or spell, schedule an assessment appointment with our experienced assessment team. An assessment can take place at our center or, by digital appointment to save gas and travel time. Our assessors are Zoom* savvy and will be happy to work with you online.

The assessment includes an hour meeting with your child exploring their phonemic, reading, writing and spelling skills.

Immediately after meeting with your child, you will sit down with the assessor and together, you will begin to unravel the mystery of the unexpected reading, writing and spelling struggles your child is dealing with.

After the assessment, you will receive a written report and recommendations for next steps. With our help, your child will soon be on their way to easier learning experiences.

If you are concerned about your child's reading skills and would like to schedule an assessment appointment, please call Phillips Fundamental Learning Center at 316-684-7323. We are here to help!

What makes our reading intervention different from "reading tutoring"?
A question parents often ask us is, “What makes your reading program different?”
We often recommend our Dyslexia Literacy Langauge Program (Alphabetic Phonics – Cox) to parents who want help for a child with dyslexia.
Literacy Intervention Specialist Training is an ungraded, multisensory curriculum, based on research evidence from the Science of Reading studies. The course teaches the structure of the English language. This phonetic program teaches reading, handwriting, spelling, verbal and written expression and comprehension by simultaneously engaging the visual, auditory and kinesthetic modalities for a student.
The course is an intervention or remediation program that is prescriptive, focusing on each individual student's needs. This differs from traditional tutoring programs, which often are scripted the same for every child.
Literacy Intervention can be taught to individuals or small groups of any age.
Each daily, one-hour session is structured to alternate modalities by including 10 different activities: alphabet, review of letters, review of sounds, multisensory introduction of a new letter, reading, cursive handwriting, spelling, verbal expression, review and listening. Research validates that our Literacy Intervention Specialist methods (Alphabetic Phonics) work for many students who struggle to read if administered systematically and explicitly.
At the Andeel Teacher Literacy Institute at Phillips Fundamental Learning Center, our Qualified Instructors (certified by ALTA) teach adult learners the Structured Literacy Intervention Specialist curriculum. We certify these trainees to become Literacy Intervention Specialists and Certified Academic Language Therapists after meeting a number of requirements, including student contact hours and observations.
When parents arrive at the center looking for answers about how to help their children improve at reading, we give them several options. One of these options is networking them with one of our trained professionals so they are able to set up private tutoring sessions. Another option for some parents is taking our Literacy Intervention Specialist courses featuring Alphabetic Phonics methods themselves.
The skill of reading requires matching letters to sounds, sounds to words, and words to expression. A jumble of sounds and symbols can become a smooth path to reading if dyslexic individuals are given the proper instruction – like that found in our Dyslexia Literacy Language System - Alphabetic Phonics (Cox) certified by ALTA for teachers and parents.
