We are facing a national reading crisis—72% of children over 4th grade in Kansas cannot read at a proficient level (NAEP 2024). Too many children are struggling, and without early intervention, they risk falling further behind.

At Phillips Fundamental Learning Center, we are taking action by equipping children with the literacy skills they need to read, write, spell, and thrive. We work with all children who struggle to read, especially those 1 in 5 students who are dyslexic.

Every day, we see incredible kids embracing their superpowers and gaining confidence.

Thanks to your generosity, they have a place to learn, grow, and shine—a place that meets their unique needs and celebrates who they are.

Every gift goes to our bottom line...helping a child learn to read.

Thank you for making a difference.

Designed for home school and classroom educators, this course provides the tools to assess curriculum for alignment with the Science of Reading and Structured Literacy methods.

The passion that fuels Dee Rolph grew over a lifetime with her husband Darrel.

He started out as a teacher in Great Bend, Kansas, where he loved working with the kids who struggled to learn. Even though his career changed to entrepreneur and businessman, Darrel retained his love of working with kids as a coach.

Darrel and Dee’s success was rooted in Wichita, and they immediately began to give back, supporting numerous organizations, all of which centered on helping young people. They loved the outdoors, fishing and family. Their own family was affected with dyslexia in profound and sad ways.

When Darrel died, Dee decided to honor his life with a legacy that reflected who he was. That led her to Phillips Fundamental Learning Center (PFLC).

Here, teachers were being trained to teach struggling readers, children who couldn’t read were being taught to read, and Jeanine Phillips and Gretchen Andeel had an amazing vision that could change the world for children.

Dee’s urge to get something done led our new building campaign.

The threads all can be seen in the laboratory school, the enhanced teacher education program, the inspiring outdoor setting and the beauty of the building – everything that touches the hearts, souls and minds of the children here and children far away.

The Darrel & Dee Rolph Literacy Academy (RLA) is a school like no other, and it lights the way for other schools and children.

RLA offers a complete curriculum including math, science, social studies, art, physical education, dance, music, theater and more.

But, its primary goal is to teach children—especially those with dyslexia—how to read, write and spell successfully, so they will be able to return to a mainstream school after leaving RLA.

Here, highly qualified teachers offer hope through the delivery of proven, research-based curriculum and multisensory instruction rooted in the Science of Reading necessary to unlock reading.

RLA provides 80 minutes per day of Alphabetic Phonics (Cox).

This is a structured, multisensory curriculum based on the Orton-Gillingham approach that teaches the structure of the English language.

This literacy program is taught with one teacher for every four students. Our instructors are Certified Academic Language Therapists, Certified Academic Language Practitioners,  or are working toward that certification.

RLA classrooms do not look like traditional classrooms, because students often are participating in hands-on, creative activities that work best to teach students who learn differently.

Teachers do not give paper-and-pencil tests or homework.

Instead, they assess each student on an individual ongoing basis with weekly reports.

Many of the students arrive scared, worried, skeptical and ashamed.

They blame themselves for their struggles with reading.

They lack confidence with letters, letter sounds and vocabulary words heard and spoken. They may have been made to feel dumb or told they lack motivation and effort.

As students progress through these unique and specialized programs, they begin to believe in their abilities.

RLA gives children control of their learning process through visual, auditory and kinesthetic activities. These methods give students confidence to learn without failure. Small successes build upon each other and become big successes.

RLA forms a PARTNERSHIP with its students, capitalizing on their strengths and striving to understand how they think and process new information and respond to challenges.

This empowers students who are then:

– allowed to DISCOVER new learning rather than having it forced upon them.

– allowed to fully EXPERIENCE new learning.

– asked what they are thinking.

– listened to as they make connections, ask questions, process new learning,

and share their “aha” moments and challenges.

Dyslexia cannot be cured. It is a neurobiological fingerprint.

But we can teach children with dyslexia how to read, write and spell sufficiently to succeed in a traditional school setting with accommodations.

RLA students not only leave our school with these necessary skills, but also with an understanding of how they learn, how to advocate for their learning style and with the confidence and self-esteem necessary for continued education and a successful life.

RLA focuses on strengths rather than deficits.

Its students leave with a real sense of their unique abilities and “superpowers.”

Dear Friend of PFLC,

We are excited to share that on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, the Kansas State Board of Education officially added "Alphabetic Phonics (Phillips Fundamental Learning Center)" to the KSDE APPROVED List of State At-Risk Evidence-Based Programs (see Page 1 highlighted text shown above).

This victory is because of you. Your letters, calls, and advocacy helped ensure that Kansas recognizes science-backed, evidence-based reading programs—the kind that truly help all children, including those with dyslexia, learn to read.

It was noted multiple times during the board meeting that your voices mattered. Your efforts have directly impacted literacy education in our state, and we are hopeful for the change this will bring.  Please take a minute from your busy schedule to thank your State School Board member(s) for listening, responding, and voting to help struggling readers become successful readers.

As we move forward with our mission - "All kids reading, all kids succeeding" - we encourage you to continue the conversations with your local school boards, administrative teams, and teachers. Together we can change the direction of reading scores in Kansas.

Stay connected! Join our mailing list to stay up to date on events, courses, and news at PFLC.

From the bottom of our hearts, THANK YOU for standing with us - your support made this possible!

The skill of reading requires matching letters to sounds, sounds to words, and words to expression. Literacy is the result.

A jumble of sounds and symbols can become a smooth path to reading and a life of literacy if dyslexic individuals are given the proper instruction – like that found in The Sound Case™ or in our Dyslexia Literacy Language System - Alphabetic Phonics (Cox) certified by ALTA for teachers and parents.

Dyslexia Advocacy Series

Join us for the "Dyslexia Advocacy Series" – a virtual session designed for parents, educators, and allies, hosted by Barb Orsi, Advocate for children with Dyslexia and Amy Trombetti, SPEDCO CEO/Founder & Administrative Specialist.

Every fourth Thursday of the month, this low-cost session will empower you to "know your rights" and develop actionable plans to secure appropriate education for children with learning differences.

Individuals with dyslexia might struggle with reading, writing and spelling, but they exchange these difficulties for strengths in other areas. Dyslexic individuals are extremely creative and can have gifts in cognitive and emotional areas, according to the Yale Center for Dyslexia and Creativity. At Phillips Fundamental Learning Center, we call these strengths super powers.

Some of the areas dyslexic people excel in can include science, problem solving, empathy, art, visual-spatial abilities and more. While we can teach dyslexic people to read, we cannot teach these gifts that dyslexic individuals are given at birth. We love to help dyslexic children discover their super powers! We do this by helping them self-identify their strengths and encouraging them to pursue them.

Identifying dyslexic children’s super powers can give them the confidence they need to forge ahead in school and reach their loftiest dreams.

When a child struggles to read, many parents do not know where to look for assistance. As a first step, PFLC offers dyslexia assessments for children ages 5-18 who might have reading difficulties.

If you have a child who is struggling to learn to read, write or spell, schedule an assessment appointment with our experienced assessment team. An assessment can take place at our center or, by digital appointment to save gas and travel time. Our assessors are Zoom* savvy and will be happy to work with you online.

The assessment includes an hour meeting with your child exploring their phonemic, reading, writing and spelling skills.

Immediately after meeting with your child, you will sit down with the assessor and together, you will begin to unravel the mystery of the unexpected reading, writing and spelling struggles your child is dealing with.

After the assessment, you will receive a written report and recommendations for next steps. With our help, your child will soon be on their way to easier learning experiences.

If you are concerned about your child's reading skills and would like to schedule an assessment appointment, please call Phillips Fundamental Learning Center at 316-684-7323. We are here to help!

What makes our reading intervention different from "reading tutoring"?

A question parents often ask us is, “What makes your reading program different?”

We often recommend our Dyslexia Literacy Langauge Program (Alphabetic Phonics – Cox) to parents who want help for a child with dyslexia.

Literacy Intervention Specialist Training is an ungraded, multisensory curriculum, based on research evidence from the Science of Reading studies. The course teaches the structure of the English language. This phonetic program teaches reading, handwriting, spelling, verbal and written expression and comprehension by simultaneously engaging the visual, auditory and kinesthetic modalities for a student.

The course is an intervention or remediation program that is prescriptive, focusing on each individual student's needs. This differs from traditional tutoring programs, which often are scripted the same for every child.

Literacy Intervention can be taught to individuals or small groups of any age.

Each daily, one-hour session is structured to alternate modalities by including 10 different activities: alphabet, review of letters, review of sounds, multisensory introduction of a new letter, reading, cursive handwriting, spelling, verbal expression, review and listening. Research validates that our Literacy Intervention Specialist methods (Alphabetic Phonics) work for many students who struggle to read if administered systematically and explicitly.

At the Andeel Teacher Literacy Institute at Phillips Fundamental Learning Center, our Qualified Instructors (certified by ALTA) teach adult learners the Structured Literacy Intervention Specialist curriculum. We certify these trainees to become Literacy Intervention Specialists and Certified Academic Language Therapists after meeting a number of requirements, including student contact hours and observations.

When parents arrive at the center looking for answers about how to help their children improve at reading, we give them several options. One of these options is networking them with one of our trained professionals so they are able to set up private tutoring sessions. Another option for some parents is taking our Literacy Intervention Specialist courses featuring Alphabetic Phonics methods themselves.

The skill of reading requires matching letters to sounds, sounds to words, and words to expression. A jumble of sounds and symbols can become a smooth path to reading if dyslexic individuals are given the proper instruction – like that found in our Dyslexia Literacy Language System - Alphabetic Phonics (Cox) certified by ALTA for teachers and parents.
