2010 A Decade of Literacy Achievements for Fundamental Learning Center
Dear Friends,
It is hard to believe that 2010 marks a decade of service to the Wichita and surrounding communities for Fundamental Learning Center. We take pride in the fact that we are an educational not-for-profit, bringing reading to life for so many children who struggle with learning to read, write and spell, including individuals with dyslexia.
With a vision of all kids reading…all kids succeeding, we dedicate our professional practice to educating teachers, parents, and others to help answer the question, “Why is this child failing to learn to read?”
FLC offers answers to this question by focusing on scientifically proven teaching methods that adhere to the five components of reading success as mandated by the Federal Department of Education: phonological awareness, systemic and structured phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension.
Since opening our doors in 2001, we have touched the lives of over 6,300 families, children, and teachers offering researched-based instructional programs that change a child’s educational future.
In 2009, we were excited to partner with the Downing Foundation and USD 259 to initiate the Downing Literacy Pilot Project. This project focused on improving reading outcomes for students by providing specific reading instruction for both teachers and for children, using a systematic and structured literacy program. 2009/2010 data results have been posted for the first year of the project. Reading related gains of dynamic proportion are reported for children who entered the project in the 0 to 13th percentiles. In most areas, children in grades Kindergarten and 1st, not only responded to instruction, but also exceeded the national mean compared to children in their same grades. Results for this amazing project are available on our website at www.funlearn.org
We wish to thank the many community contributors and foundations who support Fundamental Learning Center, teachers who have had yearned to make a difference for their students, parents who have advocated for their children, and the Downing Foundation, all of whom wrapped their arms around an “educational solution” that offers hope to thousands of our children in our communities.
All children reading…all children succeeding!
Sincerely,
